and Setup IMO is more important then amp and source. I have had several mismatched systems. Nothing like the extreme example mentioned.
Have two sets of monitors in the $400-500 range that sound quite good in the main system; Jungson JA88D and Eastsound CD-E5. I have also had a $450 Cambridge Audio integrated and $350 Cambridge Audio CDP driving $3000 monitors.
The Jungson and Eastsound are head and shoulders above the Cambridge Audio equipment. Still the $3000 monitors driven by the much cheaper CA equipment are definitly better then the $400-$500 monitors driven in the main system.
Still though it is amazing how good of sound you can get out of inexpensive speakers with good amp and source.
